Life Spaces - Where do you spend your Time? In time and over time?

"Our life is lived in moments ... in the moment ... These moments add up, and are the sum total of our life." - Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 11 December 2022, 1045am, Singapore Time

“Forever is composed of nows.” ― Emily Dickinson

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” ― Henry David Thoreau

“Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour.”  ― Walt Whitman

“Be present in all things and thankful for all things.” ― Maya Angelou

“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”  ― Amit Ray, Om Chanting and Meditation

"Our life, is not only what we make it, but how we 'see' it. Our choices are ideally made from a strong foundation of self-awareness and deep insight. This is a continuous journey. Luckily and happily, there is a science to this process, training, mentors and coaches available to assist in this process. And journey. Simply take the first step. And keep walking. One step at a time. With self-awareness. Making choices of what matters 'to you', and is meaningful 'for you'." - Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 11 December 2022, 0646am, Singapore Time

Value and impact of Self-Reflection and Coaching on Choices made, Habits, Routines and Environments - on how to feel about things, moods, thinking and actions

What is the Personal (and Professional) Value and Impact of Ontological Coaching, Being Coached and Coaching others for me? A reflection.

Poh-Sun Goh, Friday, 0425am, December 2, 2022, Singapore Time

Simply put, engaging fully in Ontological Coaching practice(s) has profoundly deepened my self and situational awareness, including how I feel, think (about), and act. Understanding why and how. Becoming a (much) better observer, and listener; of myself and others. And because of this, changing (for the better) and continuing to improve, how I am present personally, my social / professional presence and impact.

Examples of this are felt (and observable) in moments of (self-) reflection, in family and social interactions, and professional activities - including patient care; in meetings and conferences; and as educator, teaching, training, faculty development and support, supervising, facilitating, mentoring and coaching.

Coaching - Process and Value Add (for Coachee, person being coached)

What is the role of the Coach?

What is the Process and Value-Add of Coaching, for the Coachee (person being coached)?

Dear coachee, before our scheduled first (introduction to coaching) session, please review carefully the single slide above, before our session. For YLLSOM students, this slide complements the welcome to the YLLSOM in-house coaching program email to you by Professor E. Kesavan, director of the NUSMED Coaching Program.

During our first session, I will elaborate on the value (proposition) of coaching for you. Specifically why you might choose to take advantage of individual personalised coaching to give you a positive performance edge in your personal and professional life. We will discuss the process of coaching, and construct a coaching agreement together. You will also get an introductory experience of what the coaching process 'feels like' outlined in Slide below. Our subsequent session(s) will build on this, and progress deeper through this coaching process, and these will be scheduled as 30 minute coaching sessions, with a 15 minute time buffer to extend our coaching conversation if required.

Coaching is distinct from Teaching, Training, Guiding, Mentoring, Counselling and Therapy.

Coaching is 'forward looking', focusing on future possibilities, unlike Therapy or Counselling.

Short Professional Bio - https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1531-2053

"Forget about willpower. It's time for why-power. Your choices are only meaningful when you connect them to your desires and dreams. The wisest and most motivating choices are the ones aligned with that which you identify as your purpose, your core self, and your highest values. You've got to want something, and know why you want it, or you'll end up giving up too easily." — Darren Hardy (The Compound Effect: Jumpstart Your Income, Your Life, Your Success)

Mentoring Tip (sharing from my own experience, a conversation my future / current self would have had with my 17 year-old self) - "Go broad (explore), and (then) go deep (with what resonates with you, what you find interesting). What you enjoy, and find easy to do you will do more of. Sustain your effort in. And get much better at. When this adds value to others, you will have found your 'mission' in life. When these efforts are valued by others (paying you in attention, or employment), you will have found your 'life work'. This is an example of applied Ikigai". Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 9 October 2022, 0800am, Singapore Time

[compared Mentoring (sharing), with Coaching (process) below]

Coaching (Value proposition, Value-add for Coachee, the person being coached) - "Coaching will assist you to increasingly become aware of 'Why' you make choices and decisions in your life and professional career. Conversations with your Coach, and self-reflection on questions posed to you by your coach, from deep listening to your responses by your Coach, will assist you to deepen awareness of what motivates and drives you, and what you value. From this awareness, you will increasingly make more informed and intentional life and professional decisions and take actions, based on what matters most to you." Poh-Sun Goh, 9 October 2022, Sunday, 0811am, Singapore Time

Coaching Question(s) - see illustrated example of Coaching process (below)

During the Coaching process, you will explore and reflect on Why, before examining What and How

"The role of the Coach is to assist and facilitate self-reflection in the Coachee, to examine and develop (deeper) insight into what is important to the Coachee, their motivation and what drives the Coachee. These insights come from the Coachee. The Coach is a partner in this process. A mirror for the Coachee.
The Coachee identifies and makes personal choices and decisions of How to move forward, and What to do, through developing (deeper) insight into Why these choices and decisions are important (for the Coachee)." - Poh-Sun Goh, 4 October 2022, Tuesday, 0206am, Singapore Time

Definition of Coaching by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) https://coachingfederation.org/
"ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching is a client-driven process.
The coach’s responsibility is to:
• Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve
• Encourage client self-discovery
• Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
• Hold the client responsible and accountable
The coaching process helps clients improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their
leadership skills and unlocking their potential."

"The final shortcut to lasting happiness is to evolve the lifestyle you and your partner want. This requires a harmonious balance between your work life, your home life, and social life. It means you live where you want to work, have the quality of life that you want, have time to attend to family and social affairs, and are equally happy at work and outside it." - Richard Koch, Chapter 15, The Seven Habits of Happiness, from "The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More with Less", 1st edition, 1998, Doubleday, New York

Maintain, Meaning and Magnify (Life Coaching 101) - care for 'your cup' (of life), enjoy what is in it, and 'make it bigger'

Maintain, Meaning and Magnify (Life Coaching 101) - care for 'your cup' (of life), enjoy what is in it, and 'make it bigger'

Poh-Sun Goh, 17 June 2022, Friday, 0602am, Singapore Time

Maintain (sustain, support, renew), (find) Meaning (focus on the moment), Magnify (grow)

or

Using the metaphor of 'a vessel, or a cup' (of life - as your body, your environment [physical, family, social, professional], look after, sustain and maintain your 'cup'; find meaning in the here and now (enjoy and find 'joy' in what you have); and grow (build up your capabilities and capacity, to grow and expand 'your vessel, or cup') - head, hands, heart (e.g. through exploring, reading, reflection, practice, training, feedback, engagement and participation, writing, scholarship, and coaching)

with one caveat

Taking on a larger task, an expanded role, a heavier and more challenging 'burden' 'will' not only 'build muscle' (mental, physical and emotional); it will require more time, attention and energy on your part, or a recurring basis; more resources and support, and more rest, recovery and renewal time

or

at least small daily steps, (micro-practices), that can accumulate and compound over time; scaled up and sustained by either or a combination of teams (associations and organisations, both formal and informal), institutionalised processes, platforms and networks (combining human and 'tech')

also,

before you,

and as you,

commit to,

on ongoing regular basis,

Carefully observe, examine and reflect upon your 'external' experience (of life), your habits, commitments, roles and responsibilities, your choices (intentional and otherwise) - this is the 'surface phenomenon' of your life, what you (and others) 'see'

Go (one or more levels) deeper, to examine and reflect upon your 'inner experience', how you 'feel'

Ask yourself, and consider that a much wider kaleidoscope of experiences, tasks, actions and roles would very well 'give' you the 'same feeling'

If necessary, do deep (inner) work on this. Regular deep and quiet reflection. Read. Expose yourself to a wider and deeper range of ideas and perspectives (on life and living). Get coaching.

Somatic Coaching - Going 'beyond' Surface and Deep Learning - Using See, Do and Teach 'extended' process

Somatic Coaching - Going 'beyond' Surface and Deep Learning - Using See, Do and Teach 'extended' process

Poh-Sun Goh, 8 June 2022, Wednesday, 0336am, Singapore Time

Go 'beyond' Surface and Deep Learning - Using See, Do and Teach 'extended' process

From See, Do and Teach; to See (become Aware, and Explore), Do (Sample, Try[out], Experiment [and 'Play with], Practice [with reflection and feedback, including Deliberate Practice], (then) Teach (explain, elaborate, present) and then go beyond Teaching (extend Teaching and Practice, explore underlying ideas, improve and innovate) through Open Scholarship (including Micro-Scholarship)

https://medicaleducationelearning.blogspot.com/2022/06/going-beyond-surface-and-deep-learning.html

Start with what you 'see' and 'observe' - as a coach (in coachee or client; and in myself as coach), or coachee (in yourself as client) - become aware of 'how' you are 'holding your body' (your posture, your body 'shape', how you 'show up'), your (four) disposition(s) - grounded, resolute, flexible, open, and combinations of these; your breathing; how you move in the world - essentially how you 'show up' and 'your body shape' and 'body language' - which then affects and allows (makes it easier) to communicate congruent emotional and verbal (speech) messages to the world, which has direct impact and effect on what the world 'sees' and 'feels' about you, and your message(s).

https://pohsungoh.blogspot.com/2022/06/reflection-on-extent-of-surface-area.html

After becoming aware of, and observing; then Do (try out, experiment, and play with different body shapes, and body dispositions). Practice with reflection and feedback.

Everyday Leadership Episode 8: Leadership Energy with Chris Balsley (YouTube)

Take this to the next level by explaining and describing what you are noticing, and feeling. Including with your coach.

Take notes, and make notes. Go deeper into 'why' you are somatically showing up day to day in a particular way. Your past. Settings, situations, environments, interactions (with others). Your history. How this has served you. Wins and losses. What has worked, and what has not. What this informs you of your values, drives. Then intentionally shape, and design your future. With awareness, observation and insight.

Share and Teach others. Write and engage in open Scholarship. Go deeper into the science and practice of somatic coaching.
