5 powerful ideas applied to practice

5 powerful ideas applied to practice

1) - 'jobs to be done'

Christensen CM, Hall T, Dillon K, Duncan DS. Know your customers’ “jobs to be done”. https://hbr.org/2016/09/know-your-customers-jobs-to-be-done

2) -'power law' of cumulative small effort

“Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can do in a month. We overestimate what we can do in a year, and underestimate what we can accomplish in a decade." by Matthew Kelly from the book The Long View”

https://fs.blog/gates-law/

"The main idea behind the concept of leapfrogging is that small and incremental innovations lead a dominant firm to stay ahead." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leapfrogging

3) -'applied network theory' with technology to scale

.".. community of practice (is) built on shared experiences and shared skills mastered over the course of long apprenticeships ... in Rome, these communities of practice formed the basis of artisan collegia, ... gave citizens a sense of community, civic identity and belonging ... for much of history people in similar trades usually cooperated, collaborated and supported one another ... these tightly bound communities evolved because people who shared skills and experiences unique to their crafts tended to make sense of the world in similar ways, and also because their social status was often also defined by their trade ..." James Suzman, in Work: A History of How We Spend Our Time, Part 4 - Creatures of the City, Chapter 11 - The Bright Lights, page 292, 2020 edition, Bloomsbury Circus, Great Britain

"... if a community of peers creates the resources available to learners, the new technology that emerges from their efforts belongs to the peer-guided genre of learning at scale ... these communities have dramatically reshaped how people participate in lifelong learning ... making open, networked, apprenticeship learning a central part of schooling requires rethinking all aspects of the ecology of schools, from curricula to assessment to schedules to teacher professional development and beyond." - Justin Reich, Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education, Conclusion Chapter, page 235, 2020 edition, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

4) -'self-awareness' - 'interests, passions, hobbies', 'enjoy doing, find enjoyable', love to do, find joy in doing, your 'ikigai' - https://pohsungoh.blogspot.com/2020/12/the-second-curve-charles-handy.html and https://pohsungoh.blogspot.com/2020/10/regular-disconnecting-from-workday.html

"Choices - of how to spend time, energy, resources and attention (ideally) reflect a(n) (deep) understanding of values (what one values, what is important). Insight into this is developed iteratively through experience, reflection and feedback (instruction, training, working together with others, and coaching).

A journey (of a thousand mile)s is composed of many steps, and is taken one step at a time. Each step cumulatively adding to previous ones. Choose a (your) destination (well, with awareness and insight). Take the first step. And keep adding to this. Regularly and periodically pause, self-check (to confirm values and motivation underpinning (your) destination choice remain the same, and that the external situational and environmental factors remain supportive and aligned), then continue your journey. Course correcting as and when required." - Poh-Sun Goh, 23 January 2023, 0533am, Monday

“Choose (wisely, with insight and awareness - from iterative self-reflection arising from active living and life choices, feedback - from community - and coaching) where you allocate and spend your time, energy and resources, on what-with whom-and in what geographic and social/institutional environments. Your choices become and ’are’ your life.” Poh-Sun Goh, 0945am, Singapore time, Tuesday, 24 January 2023

“You’re the sum of your choices. You’re exactly who, what and where you choose to be in life.”

"The final shortcut to lasting happiness is to evolve the lifestyle you and your partner want. This requires a harmonious balance between your work life, your home life, and social life. It means you live where you want to work, have the quality of life that you want, have time to attend to family and social affairs, and are equally happy at work and outside it." - Richard Koch, Chapter 15, The Seven Habits of Happiness, from "The 80/20 Principle: The Secret of Achieving More with Less", 1st edition, 1998, Doubleday, New York

Insights from Coaching, Being Coached and From Personal Experience and Reflection
Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 16 April 2023, 0756am, Singapore Time

Life is lived in your body, relationships, environment and tasks. Nature and Nurture. Genetics and Environment. Attention, Awareness and Choices.

Shaped by Intention, and demands of your body (e.g. in health and illness), and your environment (e.g. roles, relationships, climate and weather, challenges and tasks; what you work on - as an occupation, vocation and passion). Integrated and constantly Evolving over time, through Growth, and Maturation (Aging well or not).

Choices made, international and unconscious habits, and demands of your body (e.g. hunger and thirst, what you are ‘hungry for’) and environment shape the quality of your life. In the moment, and cumulatively adding up over time. What you put into your body, what you do ‘with’ your body, and mind; in your roles, responsibilities and relationships; fundamentally shape your life. Both personal and professional.

Exercise. Work. Rest. Recharge. Renew. Read. Reflect. Keep learning. Keep challenging yourself. Stay curious. Take intentional and strategic pauses. Keep growing. Embrace stillness and activity. Silence and speech. Listen and observe. Explore. Repeat. Find your rhythm and rhyme. Live within, and without. Embrace and do the Inner and External Work. Then Rest, Renew, Reflect, Reflect, and Re-engage.

Life Spaces - Where do you spend your Time? In time and over time?

"Our life is lived in moments ... in the moment ... These moments add up, and are the sum total of our life." - Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 11 December 2022, 1045am, Singapore Time

“Forever is composed of nows.” ― Emily Dickinson

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.” ― Henry David Thoreau

“Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour.”  ― Walt Whitman

“Be present in all things and thankful for all things.” ― Maya Angelou

“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.”  ― Amit Ray, Om Chanting and Meditation

"Our life, is not only what we make it, but how we 'see' it. Our choices are ideally made from a strong foundation of self-awareness and deep insight. This is a continuous journey. Luckily and happily, there is a science to this process, training, mentors and coaches available to assist in this process. And journey. Simply take the first step. And keep walking. One step at a time. With self-awareness. Making choices of what matters 'to you', and is meaningful 'for you'." - Poh-Sun Goh, Sunday, 11 December 2022, 0646am, Singapore Time

Heart drives Head drives Hands - and - Action shapes Thinking and Mood

Value and impact of Self-Reflection and Coaching on Choices made, Habits, Routines and Environments - on how to feel about things, moods, thinking and actions

"Your actions can control your thoughts ... and your mood" - William James
i.e. "if you act happy your will feel happy ... if you act enthusiastic, you will feel enthusiastic ... if you act healthy, you will feel healthy" - Og Mandino, in "The Greatest Secret in The World", 1978, Bantam edition, Bantam Books

#Personal (#Professional) #Value and #Impact #OntologicalCoaching - #BeingCoached and #Coaching

What is the Personal (and Professional) Value and Impact of Ontological Coaching, Being Coached and Coaching others for me? A reflection.

Poh-Sun Goh, Friday, 0425am, December 2, 2022, Singapore Time

Simply put, engaging fully in Ontological Coaching practice(s) has profoundly deepened my self and situational awareness, including how I feel, think (about), and act. Understanding why and how. Becoming a (much) better observer, and listener; of myself and others. And because of this, changing (for the better) and continuing to improve, how I am present personally, my social / professional presence and impact.

Examples of this are felt (and observable) in moments of (self-) reflection, in family and social interactions, and professional activities - including patient care; in meetings and conferences; and as educator, teaching, training, faculty development and support, supervising, facilitating, mentoring and coaching.
