My personal takeaways from TED Talk by Julia Galef - 'Why you think you are right, even if you're wrong':

Idea of 'motivated reasoning'. Emotional defence of bias. Predispositions and values driving the way we see the world, feel, and act.

The 'soldier mindset' vs the 'scout mindset'.  We can develop the 'scout mindset' by changing our emotions, how we 'feel'.  The 'soldier mindset' is rooted in emotions like defensiveness or tribalism. The 'scout mindset' in emotions and values of being curious, open and grounded. A cluster of traits predicting good judgement. 

Further example (using Charles Darwin's letter response to critic, who Darwin felt 'heard' him, by condensing in his written critique a complete description of Darwin's central thesis, with Darwin also acknowledging the what was 'missing' in his thesis, pointed out by the critic). This is similar to the process we engage with as 'Scholars' and 'an Academic'. (Macroevolution concept).
